The need for urgency is the world we live in today and maybe always lived in. That need can make or break you. OXRUN, from Baltimore, Maryland, explores every bit of that need for urgency. Their self-titled debut cassette on Anathemata Editions is something to behold as it sounds as if they already have multiple releases under their belt. OXRUN comes out swinging with a confidence that can be heard from
the first note, utilizing stops and starts and the tension in between masterfully. The tension in those spaces is how “Noise Rock,” “Mutant Hardcore,” or whatever other pointless genre you want to chain them to really should sound.

It’s no surprise they’re able to set each song ablaze when considering the pedigree here: members of Gloop, Knub, Mass Ego, Ugly Twin, Silk Leash, and Birth (Defects). In reality, though, OXRUN has carved a path outside of those aforementioned bands by pure force. “Man in the Window” pulses with vocalist Matt Buie leaching forward as if enjoying the desperation for just one breath. “Ears Clipped” begins with a riff that seems like it could implode, but guitarist Shalin knows exactly when to keep the riff just on the edge. The closer, “Now Your Children Will Know,” is a total demonstration on how to combine everything you just heard into a singular vision of build up to total loss in the best way due to bassist Surafel Makonnen and drummer Ben Zamzow seemingly locked in and ready to let it all collapse at a moment’s notice.

OXRUN recorded the EP in a span of three days with engineer Justin Day at New Noise, and the band made it a point to craft these songs with precision and an unwavering devotion to make a statement, making sure each song felt as important as the song before. No let up. No cheap tricks here. No feedback for feedback’s sake. No gimmicks. Just urgency. Yeah, urgency can make or break you. With OXRUN, it’s not either/or, it’s both.
